    Renting in London is a very transient experience.

    In the last three years I have discovered that moving in with other people is brilliant, but it basically puts you at the mercy of any life changes they wish to make – and visa versa.

    People move abroad. Houses get sold. Boyfriends and girlfriends move in together. Relationships break up. Flats fall down. Marriage happens. A weekly game of Bin Jenga loses its appeal.

    Despite all this, living with others continues to be your best option in a city where the average cost of owning your own place is £360,000. But beyond that, I’m no closer to knowing what the perfect recipe for a house or flat share actually is.

    Usually when you pull into Charing Cross station on the tube, the driver tells you to alight here for British Rail services, Trafalgar Square and various tourist hot spots. 

    They rarely mention that you might like to alight there for South Africa House, but today – the morning after Nelson Mandela’s death – our announcement was a little bit different.

    “Alight here for the Northern line, and British Rail. Alight here for Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and South Africa House, if you’re wanting to pay your respects to a hero of democracy and statesmanship.”

    Things You Shouldn’t Do While Walking Around London, Number 1: Use Technology

    London is a very accepting place.

    We should be proud of the fact that we live in a city where you can walk around dressed as a clown or a skeleton or a monkey and no one really cares.

    But despite this relative indifference to things like seeing someone wandering up the Kingsland Road wearing a cape and carrying a boombox, or getting on the tube dressed as a panda, even London has its limits of what is acceptable and what isn’t.

    And friends, there are some things you should never do when walking around London.
