There are a lot of blogs about London on the internet. About 9 million, at last count (source: my wild imagination)
However, my favourite blogs are the often ones that give a bit of a different insight into the city, delve (sometimes literally) below the surface, or take an every day element of London and give it some love, care and attention.
So here are ten blogs that might make you laugh, raise your eyebrows, or at any rate, will give you something slightly different to read on your lunch break.
What’s In Your Bedroom - http://whatsinyourbedroom.blogspot.co.uk/
Olivia Howitt’s blog goes literally behind the front doors we pass every day, and documents the various different bedrooms of Londoners. They’re all different, but there is one thing that binds them all: they’re all tidier than mine.
London Shop Fronts – http://www.londonshopfronts.com
Emily Webber’s idea is a simple one: take pictures of London shop fronts, put ‘em on a blog: browse by area or type. Unusual, but strangely compelling.
Little London Observationist - http://littlelondonobservationist.wordpress.com/
This is one of those blogs I find myself leafing through a few times a week; and is basically the observations of an American ex-pat, Steph, living in London. Nice photos, weekly blog round ups and a generally likeable little spot.
Favours for Strangers - http://favoursforstrangers.com
Unfortunately, it looks like this one didn’t really get off the starting blocks. Barney’s idea was to go around London doing – you guessed it – favours for strangers. Whether the strangers just weren’t that receptive or tying children’s shoe laces lost its shine; but it hasn’t been updated in a while. Still, a nice idea.
Dogs Outside Shops - http://www.photosofdogsoutsideshops.blogspot.co.uk/
I love dogs, so photos of them looking a bit lost / hopeful / indifferent outside shops in London was always going to go down well in my book.
Bollards of London - http://www.bollardsoflondon.co.uk/
Admittedly, I don’t find myself dipping into this one on a daily basis, but nevertheless, it’s worth pointing out that a blog focusing purely on those metal things that stick up out of London’s pavements does indeed exist. A triumph for the internet an, err, bollards, I’m sure you’ll agree.
Sub-Urban - http://www.sub-urban.com/
Again, not one I read – but here’s a blog I came across while searching for, well, I can’t remember exactly what term lead me to a blog about London’s sewers. What I do remember is being charmed by a stupendous collection of words on the front page. Ladies and gents, I give you: “Close encounters of the turd kind” – genius.
People on the Tube - http://peopleonthetube.tumblr.com/
A long time favourite London blog of mine, this one is all about the weird, wonderful and just plain funny people you come across on the tube. Surreptitiously taken on camera phones, all the submissions give a brilliant insight into the unusual characters you find underground.
Abandoned in London - http://abandonedinlondon.com/
Doreen’s blog is a collection of objects, art and anomalies found abandoned on London’s streets. A good one to click through while pondering just how people manage to go out with two shoes, and only come home with one.
Shit London - http://shitlondon.co.uk/
Probably the most well known one on this list, Shit London is the one blog that has been known to make me laugh out loud, and proves that London’s worst bits are often the funniest.
I’m always looking for new London blogs to read, so if you know of a good one – let me know. I want them all.
